I'd dreamt of getting to see Paintbrush blooms from the moment I learned of them many years ago during my botanical studies. They quickly became a special symbol of the great American West - a land that I deeply admired and longed to call my own one day. I never expected to discover the most wonderful patch of them during my first hike in Colorado.
They were even more vibrant and foreign than I imagined, and that blazing red against the bright blue sky took my breath away. From the moment I saw them, I knew I had to paint them. This study is the result.
